Properties pane

Hi Pierre:

Is it possible to get the properties pane to stop scrolling to a new location every time I make an entry in all fields? The return to thee top is counter-productive and disorienting. I know this has been mentioned before and I think it was supposed to be fixed.

I can buy a boat anchor if that would help.

Thank you.

Jon

Re: Properties pane

+1
Even when closing all sections at the top, the focus always changes.
Splitting the properties pane in 2 (3?) independent section would probably also help.

Not comfortable with this suggestion. Some of the sections can become rather long, particularly the All Fields section, so unless the underlying problem is fixed you will end up with three panes afflicted with the same undesirable behavior. The real problem is losing focus then scrolling to the top. Also, having three panes can sap screen space and become very cluttered. Just maintain the focus and that would solve the problem.

This is exactly why splitting it in autonomous sections would be helpful.

E.g. While you'd be looking at the item's properties, you could be working on a form and playing with some extra fields in the "available fields" section. The current UI doesn't allow that and the user has to endlessly scroll from bottom to top, top to bottom, close sections to be Able to see the whole form, then close the forms, scroll back down, scroll up, cha cha cha.

I spend considerable time in the properties pane (some fields there act more as buttons triggering functions and various scripts), and having one long endless string of fields makes it a bit annoying to manage. Not impossible, but annoying.

Now, as for the best way to implement that, I'll leave it to Pierre.

Re: Properties pane

OK, this is improved in v0.9.26PreRel30

but... as a minor inconvenience, newly entered values shown in the Item info > Values section but will not be sorted correctly, simply added to the bottom of the list

Hope this will suit most users !

Re: Properties pane

Honestly, I am not thrilled by this "solution." If it cannot be fixed I would greatly appreciate it if you left it as is is until a complete fix can be implemented.

Re: Properties pane

I'm personally fine with this solution. I'm almost never looking at all sections at once.
(And when I am, I'm often struggling to find my fields in the list -- my items often have 10s of values assigned to them.)

It might even be better than to have an "on the fly" sorting : that way, the end of the Value section would always show the newly added values to new fields. IMO, depending on the situation, it could make it easier to find the new fields than to go through the alphabetical list. And if one wants to see everything well sorted, I guess a simple  F7/F8 to back and forth between items would instantaneously sort it.

Anyway, I suggest we try it and see if it's viable. Especially if it prevents the pane to jump around...

If it doesn't work well... let's just report back.

Re: Properties pane

I have reservations, but OK. Let's see how this works.
