I like the cube and grid theme; DataCube, InfoCube
The new suggestions also have a nice new ring, the 'mind' integration might be too suggestive of brainstorming sw, i.e. MindMap, DataFlex seems nice.
MindPad
DataFlex
GridMind
GridNotes
GridWork

I think the cube names are a bit technical again. Most users will have no idea what a data cube is. |
But a cube is not necessarly technical, my 4 year old has cubes (for those that do not know, OLAP cubes are the same as pivot tables -- used in SQLNotes --, hence are an aggregate/analysis tool)
The cube, or box, is a container for information. You pour information into the cube. The cube faces display some of the information in the cube, and each face can display it in a different way (outline, grid, calendar, rich-text word-processor, etc). And users can control what information is displayed on each face, to give different perspective to the same information, or to see different/complementary information.
A great difficulty users are having with SQLNotes, the application, especially non-Ecco users, is the disconnect between the data and its presentation. So many users have written to me that they had lost their data, when it was simply not displayed on the grid (or cube face). The data was still in the cube, but was no longer displayed.
Users are not used to this disconnect between data and presentation. An Excel sheet looks the same everytime you open it. The data is an integral part of the Excel sheet. Sure you can filter, hide columns but data nevertheless belongs to the sheet. Delete the sheet, gone is the data. Same for a word-processor. Other information organizers too. Ecco is the only one I know that was like SQLNotes.
The concept of cube, or box, can, I think, really get users going: I have all this information in the cube, which part do I want to display on this face (i.e. this grid) ?
Of the various cube/box variations, the one I like most is InfoCube. Pierre (Win XP Pro SP2, Admin, Auto-updates ON, Firefox, Acer TravelMate 660 graphics). |

Most of the names being considered are two part composite words usually involving “plan”, “note”, “data”, “Info” etc as one of the parts (yawn). You can’t really explain the software in this way: Is it planning sofware? Is it for note taking? Is it a database? Is it a PIM? Well its all of those and choosing any one undersells the product. Also these names sound dull and technical, like a wet Monday at work, which is why everyone is lukewarm about them. I think you want the name to say: “This is a new, cool and trendy product in a category of it’s own that you must have”. Apple for instance have been very successful with the approach of using short catchy names that only vaguely suggest the product function, but are intriguing enough to make people want to investigate further.
On your cube theme maybe you could use a name like:
Cubix
Cubic
iCube
Cubit
Cubits
I think NeoTech iCube sounds particularly cool:
“NeoTech iCube – the multidimensional information management software!” |

Unfortunately I don't like any of the names. Daou and ZePim I like best of these. If you try to be too descriptive, it sounds boring. Go for fun! Think of the short names of web apps that have gained popularity - Google, Soho, Flickr, Picasa. Think of a name that can be used as a verb - like "Google it!" Here are names of products out there: Stikkit, Todoist, Backpack, Jott, Zoot, Digg, Remember the Milk, etc.
So why not make it fun!
How about
Squogger
Squall (SQL + All) (a sudden, sharp increase in wind speed)
Sqweal
Mister Peabody (famous dog genius)
Peabody
Landskape
Atomik
Dabomb
Smarteepants
Wyzeguy
CranaPPL
SnaPPL
CuPPL
DimPPL
PPLeez

If you want to go with the Cube theme, why not make it a bit more interesting? Why not just Cubit (Cube-it, also a unit of measurement), Cubitz, Qubit, Qube, Kyoob. The spellings would give you Googleability. |

I'm copying and pasting my own ideas from the Donation Coder forum to here, but I have to admit I like the sound of some of these cube-inspired names, and I agree with mhailes that the two-part names (like my suggestions) can sound dull and technical and possibly turn people off.
I really like Qube and Kyoob. Very Lifehacker, very marketable.
For the record then, my suggestions from earlier today:
I was thinking of how to show that it deals with all your data in different forms, and that it not only shows it but can manipulate it and calculate from it.
From the idea that you can view your data from different angles, I thought of holographs - so what about Holodata, or Holonotes?
On the same lines, I thought of Amphidata or Ambidata (since it works as database, spreadsheet, outliner etc).
Then on the theme of meshing and intersections, how about Filodata, Cordodata, Datacrux or Datasect.
As to analysing notes, how about Notalyser (or Notalyzer)? Gez - aka Suleika or GeekAndDiva (Windows XP Pro SP2, Admin, Auto-updates off, Dell and Acer laptops)

I think I like Qube. it's a simple yet powerful metaphor, it's "multi language" friendly and has lots of visual potential (IMO). |
