I'm one of those who have floated around and 4 years ago, I decided it was time to do something about it. I did a review of the goods and bads of all the softwares I knew and designed SQLNotes. First functional version took 9 months and have been adding features and improvements since then.
It is always hard to decide when to call it a day and release a product, but I think that time is coming soon.
As an flexible database/information manager/outliner, it is already in production in a number enterprises, all very satisfied (BTW consultants wanting to develop SQLNotes markets in enterprises are welcomed. It can be very lucrative since companies -- unlike individuals -- don't mind paying 2-10k$ for a database solution. Please contact me at support at sqlnotes.net).
As a PIM, there are a few major blocks to add before a release (namely calendar, phonebook, gantt, off-line, synching)
