Wikitag

Does anyone use wikitags?  I put a page in the wiki.

1) Does anyone have a more practical example that could be added to it?

2) Can someone comment on how to decide when to use this type of tag versus putting things in a tagged list?

3) Does the wiki page make sense to someone who hasn't tried anything with hyperlinking?

4) Is there anything missing, unclear, etc?  i.e. more text ...

sqlnotes.wikispaces.com/Wikitags

By the way Tom, your recent wiki work is great!

Looks good Keith

I use linking a fair bit but to be honest had no idea what the wikitag thing was/is

Is my understanding correct here:

Using Wikitags, let's say 20 items have a particluar wikitag (in the wikitag field I mean)

Then I create a link to this wikitag in an item. If I click on this link it will change the source of current grid (to that particular wikitag) open the scratchpad with that wikitag as source - which means only the 20 tagged items will show

[?]

EDIT/ if we get a good definition here I can add it to appropriate pages (Glossary, Links, maybe your page too?)

Re: Wikitag

hows this for a definition (Glossary)

  • Wikitag Wikitags are tag words enclosed in {fancy brackets} and entered in the WikiTag field/column. You can then create a Wikitag link in an Item (see Link above) that will open all relevant Wikitagged Items in the Scratch Grid

That sounds good.  How about collectively we start filling up the glossary with every relevant term we can think of,  and kind of have an idea of everything that should be covered?  Then we can keep at it... (I'm having a lot of fun learning the program better this way!)

That's right. The way I came up to use it, is by making an item in the Inbox (which has 145 items right now), that has a {today} in the wikitag field, as well as the hyperlink statement. Then when I click that item, it shows up in a scratch grid, which is quite handy; I use that thing for jotting down say the 5-6 quick things I need to do this evening before bedtime.

Re: Wikitag

Adding all definitions or many new words for definition is a good idea - re filters there's probably a dozen LOL

For ..what's the word.. "Standardness" (?)

could you add them via the Text Editor using this format

 ----
=G=
* __**Title**__ text here

* __**Another Title**__ text here

----
=H=

I ask that because when I add them via the visual editor I notice formatting seems to go a bit funny (nothing major, maybe I'm being a little obsessive!) also I think the blank line after each item cannot be added via Visual Editor

Thanks

so for items you want done today you add the wikitag to them - when they're done you remove the tag, is that it?

I just keep that scratch pad open all the time, then delete the text manually as I get something done. For example now, there's nothing in it, but afterwhile I'll add a few small things to it.

Pierre mentioned at some point that he'd review wiki functionalities... Maybe he could say what he foresees, before more is done about wikitags documentation ?

Apart from that, I think that that the wikitags page is nice (thanks Keith!!) but there’s a bit too much info.

A text only intro with the steps involved to create a wikitag and use it could be added at the beginning. And all the extra (like should be put at the end.

the explanation could be as followed (written quickly)

Create a wikitag :

If you can't see the wikitags column/field in your grid :

1- Select an item

2- find the item’s wikitag field (you can 1- use the properties pane and find the wikitag field —  F4 or view -> properties — , or 2- add the column to the grid by right clicking on the columns heading and choose  -> display column —> tick the wikitag field, or just drag drop the wikitag field from the properties pane to the grid… Lot’s of options!)

Otherwise just :

à Enter a term in the item’s  wikitag field — the term must be bracketed :  {example}.

This item can now be reached/hyperlinked through its {example} tag.

How ?

Create a link to a wikitagged item (similar process for any links):

1.    Right click on an item and select the hyperlink icon (icon looks like a chain link)

2.    In the “hyperlink window” :  1- enter the text you want to see in your item field, 2- in the “file, grid…” textbox, enter the {example}

3.    tag (with the brackets please).

select OK. That’s it.

If you click on the newly created hyperlink, you’ll be brought to all items that have the {example} wikitag, in the “scratch” grid.

PS : links to the already existing info about links an wikitags could be added to the page.

Re: Wikitag
  • How about you put this text in as you propose, and we both see how it turns out?
  • I really understand things with the screen captures and stuff. I don't think there can be too much info!  A lot of the time with this program, reading the forum, doesn't easily make sense unless I'm very familiar with the terms..Otherwise I need pictures with the words! .Unfortunately I'm getting pretty good at a lot of things with IQ now, and don't want to forget what it was like back in late April this year when I first found this program (nothing made sense for quite a while!)
  • As to future changes of the program, I'm taking my chances!  For example, named filters is supposed to be soon, but it has been a year since it was "any day now". I don't care if anything I write becomes obsolete; I figure the time I spend learning the old way will help with whatever the new way is.
  • Do you have any info as to any topics that would be better to work on, or not work on.
  • One final thing--how are we going to keep track of all the in-work stuff?  For example, I need to digest this page; I might not have time to make the decision right now; I know I have one of the pages with a poor screenshot.  Maybe we need a mantis-type database online!  I wonder if that's feasible.
  • Thanks for jumping in!!! (I was hoping you would, since you are one of the masters).  That was one of my motivating factors for trying to get this going was reading over and over the same questions in the forum collection.

Re: Wikitag

thanks for the feedback keith.

first off all by "too much info",  I didn't mean that the info there wasn't good. I just think that a short concise presentation to introduce the screenshots would be great.  I'll do  tomorrow if I have the time... (UNfortunately... I have to fly right now...)

yes, we shouldn't worry too much about future changes... I just thought I'd mention it since Pierre mentionned changes about wikitags in particular.. But yes, let's move forward.

I think any topic is good. But I can think of the most urgent topics (for me... subjective... ) if you want...

Take care
